10/18/15 We Shall Live Forever

READING: John 6

TEXTS AND APPLICATION:  This past week was the third anniversary of my dad’s passing away. You might know that we prayed for him for more than 35 years, and the Lord dramatically saved him three years before he died. Dad was 71 when he was saved, but the last three years of his life were so different than the previous seven decades that we were blessed to get to know a completely new man.

When I think about his passing away, these words that echo throughout John 6 mean that much more to me today:

John 6:27  Don’t work for the food that perishes but for the food that lasts for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.

John 6:40 For this is the will of My Father: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.

John 6:50-51 This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that anyone may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread he will live forever.

John 6:58  This is the bread that came down from heaven; it is not like the manna your fathers ate—and they died. The one who eats this bread will live forever.

Jesus gives us eternal life. That truth should change the way we live today.

ACTION STEPS:  Take some time today to think about your Christian loved ones and friends who are now with God. Thank God for the promise of eternal life.

PRAYER: “Thank You, Lord, for overcoming death and guaranteeing eternal life. As I gather with Your people at church today, help me to live in the light of eternity. Help us to celebrate life.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Matthew 15, Mark 7
