06/16/16 More Than We Can Imagine

READING: Psalms 21-25

God is so much more than you and I can imagine. Even when we think we might have figured Him out a bit, the Word reminds us that we can’t even come close to comprehending Him.

In just today’s reading, for example, He is the divine warrior who brings judgment when He appears for battle (Psalm 21:9), the King of glory who is “strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle” (Psalm 24:8). At the same time, though, He’s the Lord who makes us glad with the joy of His presence (Psalm 21:6), the shepherd who walks with us through “the darkest valley” (Psalm 23:4), the one who “guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way” (Psalm 25:9).

Moreover, He owns the entire world (Psalm 24:1). He demands worship from all the nations (Psalm 22:27-28) and swallows up His enemies in His wrath (Psalm 21:9), yet He loves us with an “unfailing love” (Psalm 21:7) and forgives our sin “though it is great” (Psalm 25:11).  He alone is our release from the enemy’s traps as we look to Him like the psalmist did: “My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare” (Psalm 25:15).

He is, to my astonishment and wonder, the blazing warrior who was forsaken and ridiculed, the gentle shepherd who reigns over the nations, and the King of glory who leads us beside quiet waters (Psalm 23:2). He is the Lord Almighty who “founded [the world] on the seas” (Psalm 24:2), and who also forgives our wrongs, guards our life, and rescues us from the enemy. He made it all, yet still He knows us by name.

He’s amazing. Hard to imagine or comprehend, actually. In fact, if you think you’ve figured out God completely, your God is too small.

ACTION STEPS:

  • Rejoice every time God grants you a victory today.
  • If you’re physically able to do so, kneel before God and praise Him.

PRAYER: “Lord, I pray the words of the psalmist today: ‘For the sake of your name, Lord, forgive my iniquity. . . . According to your love remember me, for you, Lord, are good’” (Psalm 25:11, 7).

TOMORROW’S READING:  Psalms 26-31
