09/12/16 The Glory Returns

READING: Ezekiel 43-45

The glory of the Lord returns to the temple in today’s reading that describes what Ezekiel saw, and the prophet was privileged to see it happen: “Then the Spirit of the Lord lifted me up and brought me into the inner court, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple” (Ezek 43:5). This is hardly an insignificant happening. God had judged His people for their sin, but He was now bringing renewal and restoration; even in His holiness, He was bringing forgiveness and grace. It’s no wonder, then, that all Ezekiel could do was fall facedown (Ezek 44:4).

Moreover, the temple Ezekiel saw was to be a sign of God’s commitment to keep His word to His people. He would bring His people back, cleanse them from their sins, and give them a new heart — and His glorious return to the temple was a vivid reminder of that truth. Indeed, God gave this vision to Ezekiel so his description might bring the people of God to repentance: “Son of man, describe the temple to the people of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their sins” (Ezek 43:10). When the people saw what God was showing Ezekiel, they would see their sinfulness in the light of God’s glory, be ashamed, and turn to Him in godly sorrow.

I think today about all that God has done for me. He has never let me go, even though I’ve often wandered from the path. He has accepted me again and again when I’ve turned back from my backsliding. He has forgiven me of sins for which I sometimes still carry guilt when I can’t forgive myself. And (and this is what amazes me today), He has promised me eternity in heaven in a place so glorious that human words cannot fully capture it. For some incomprehensible, gracious reason, He will allow me to be among the number worshiping Him around His throne.

When I think of all that — of God’s goodness, grace, glory, and gifts — I am ashamed of my sin. More importantly, I want to be holy. I think that’s what God intends as He makes Himself known to us through His Word.

ACTION STEPS:

  • Spend some time meditating on God’s willingness to hold your hand even when you wanted to let go.
  • Read Revelation 21-22 today, and get the picture of heaven in your mind. Let that image drive you away from sin and to God.

PRAYER: “Lord, let Your glory be evident in my life today.”

TOMORROW¹S READING: Ezekiel 46-48
