12/18/16 The Greater One

READING: Hebrews 7-10

We are only one week away from celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. To be honest, I think we often go through the motions of the holiday season without thinking deeply about who Jesus is.

The writer of Hebrews, though, didn’t miss that focus; in fact, much of the book is intended to point out that Jesus is God’s final revelation, the ultimate high priest who purchased our redemption and “sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven” (Heb 8:1). He is “holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens” (Heb 7:26). Through His sacrifice, He “took away the sins of many” (Heb 9:28), dying in our place as the perfect sacrifice. He will come again a second time (Heb 9:28), but now “he always lives to intercede” for us (Heb 7:25).

Drink in these truths today. For this entire year, we have recognized the reality of our spiritual battle against a real enemy. He seeks to devour us, to destroy our witness for Christ. Jesus, though, has not only already defeated the enemy, but He also continually intercedes for us as we face our battles. Everything He has done for us, is currently doing for us, and will ultimately do for us, He does as the One who represents us to God. That’s one of the reasons we can rest in our salvation: he “is able to save completely those who come to God through him” because he is always, always, always interceding for us. If He’s always praying for us, no room is left for the enemy to ultimately defeat us.

Let these thoughts encourage you today, and then share them with somebody else. Spur others to follow this magnificent Christ with “love and good deeds” (Heb 10:24).

ACTION STEPS:

  • Passionately encourage someone else to follow Jesus fully.
  • Some of the readers of the book were Hebrews were apparently abandoning meeting with other believers (Heb 10:25). If you’re not faithful to a local church, change that pattern today.

PRAYER: “Thank You, God, for sending Jesus as the ultimate and superior sacrifice for my sins.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Hebrews 11-13
