02/20/17 I Will Walk among You

READING: Leviticus 26-27, Mark 2

“I will walk among you.”

Leviticus 26:12

Frankly, I take much for granted in my walk with God. For example, I don’t think nearly enough about the implications of words like these: “I will place My residence among you, and I will not reject you. I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be My people” (Lev. 26:11-12). The God of the Hebrews was not an idol made with hands, an object with eyes that could not see, a mouth that could not speak, and ears that could not hear. Rather, He is the God who freed His people from bondage in Egypt and chose to walk among them and be their God.

I most often think about texts like these when I’m traveling the world and see such things as a non-believer offering a sacrifice to a false god, or a family that has statues of their gods in the corner of their home.  They may have purchased those “gods” in the market or created them with their own hands, but they fail to see the problems associated with worshiping a god you can create and often hold in your hands. Deceived by a sly enemy, they cling to false gods who can neither make a covenant with them nor remember it graciously if/when they turn away from their disobedience.

The God of the Bible, on the other hand, calls His people to godliness, holds them accountable to His standards, meets their needs when they obey Him, brings redemptive judgment on them when they disobey Him, and always keeps His covenant with them: “I will not reject or abhor them so as to destroy them and break My covenant with them, since I am Yahweh their God. For their sake I will remember the covenant with their fathers, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations to be their God; I am Yahweh” (Lev. 26:44-45). He’s the living and loving God who spoke to His people through Moses, and who speaks to us today through His Word.

And, He’s the God who saved me. I take that truth for granted far too much.

ACTION STEPS:

  • Make wise choices to obey God today, knowing that there are consequences to whatever choices you make.
  • Thank God for being a God who always keeps His Word.

PRAYER: “Father, show me today the importance of being obedient to You. Guide me to make wise choices.”
