10/15/17 I Am the Lord

READING: Isaiah 45-46, 1 Thessalonians 3

“I am the Lord, and there is no other.”

Isaiah 45:6

In the busyness and craziness of life, it’s good for me when God’s Word repeats itself many times – when it reverberates with a truth the Bible doesn’t want me to miss. Listen, for example, to these repeated words in today’s Old Testament reading:

  • “I am the Lord, and there is no other, besides me there is no God” (Isa. 45:5).
  • “I am the Lord, and there is no other” (Isa. 45:6).
  • “Surely God is in you, and there is no other, no god besides him” (Isa. 45:15).
  • “I am the Lord, and there is no other” (Isa. 45:18).
  • “And there is no other god besides me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none besides me” (Isa. 45:21)
  • “For I am God, and there is no other” (Isa. 45:22).
  • “For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me” (Isa. 46:9).

Obviously, this truth matters. In Isaiah’s day, the people needed this recurrent reminder that no idol could compare to the one and only true God; only He created light and darkness, controlled history, subdued nations, spoke truth, and brought salvation. He alone could say, “I have spoken, and I will bring it to pass” (Isa. 46:11).  It will be only to Him that “every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance” (Isa. 45:23).

Still today, we need to hear this truth that there is no other God. I need to hear it. You likely need to hear it. The only God there is has chosen to come to us, die for us in our sin, call us to Himself, save us, and make us His children. He does what He does so that “people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides [him]” (Isa. 45:6), and only He has the words of eternal life (John 6:68).

There simply is no one like Him. He alone is worthy of worship – and I need to remember that truth.

ACTION STEPS:

  • As you go to church today, truly worship God. He is worthy.
  • Pray for others around the world who are following false gods.

PRAYER: “God, I praise You for who You are. Amen.”

TOMORROW’S READING:  Isaiah 47-49, 1 Thessalonians 4
