12/16/17 Martyrdom

READING: Amos 4-6, Revelation 7

“And they cried out in a loud voice: Salvation belongs to our God, who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

Revelation 7:10

Martyrs. Men and women who died because of their commitment to Christ. Those who chose death over denying Christ. Those who said “no” to life because they had previously said “yes” to Jesus. Those who lived with eternity in mind, knowing that death was only the entrance into the eternal tomorrow. Believers who’ve reminded us of what really matters—and of what really doesn’t matter.

The apostle John supernaturally saw redeemed martyrs around the throne of God, “a vast multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language, which no one could number, standing before the throne and before the Lamb” (Rev. 7:9). They wore white robes, strangely and beautifully made white “in the blood of the Lamb” (Rev. 7:14). No longer would they hunger or thirst; they would live under the care of the One who was both their shelter and their shepherd. He alone would “guide them to springs of living waters . . . and . . . wipe away every tear from their eyes” (Rev. 7:17). They may have wept in life, but they would rejoice in the forever.

You see, to live for Jesus is to be on the winning side. And, to die for Him is not to lose—it is to win eternally. Whatever the world offers us pales in comparison to crying out around the throne, “Worthy is the Lamb!”

ACTION STEPS:

  • Consider those around the world who may die for Jesus today. Pray they will be faithful unto death.
  • Be mindful of the daily protection God gives us. Thank God for His care.

PRAYER: “Father, grant me faith to live for You today—and to die if that were Your call for me.”

TOMORROW’S READING:  Amos 7-9, Revelation 8
