06/03/18 A Good Wife

READING: Proverbs 18

“A man who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.”

Proverbs 18:22

I spent a long time finding a wife. In fact, I experienced a broken engagement at age 26, and I didn’t marry until age 30. Many of my friends were already long married by the time Pam and I finally “tied the knot.” Others had attempted over several years to fix me up with the right person. I, too, continually watched for the young lady who might be the right one—bud did not find her until Pam came along (also at the invitation of two church secretaries, by the way…).

It didn’t take me long to recognize that Pam was God’s gift to me. She loves me with a depth of love I cannot fully understand. She tolerates my impatience, laughs at my jokes, and understands my fears. I see God in her daily – and I in fact often write about her influence in my life. Thus, I happily agree with the writer of Proverbs: “A man who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord” (Prov. 18:22). Pam’s is evidence of God’s favor on me.

This text does not suggest that God plans for everyone to be married, but it does remind us that marriages He orchestrates are gifts indeed. He directs relationships into “divine intersections” that change us, and He uses our God-centered marriages to make us more like Him. A good spouse is surely a gift from heaven.

ACTION STEPS:

  • If you are married, thank God for your spouse.
  • Surprise your spouse with some gift of appreciation today.

PRAYER: “Lord, thank You for my spouse.”
