08/15/18 Hearing and Speaking

READING: Jeremiah 25-28

“This word came to Jeremiah from the Lord.”

Jeremiah 27:1

God reveals Himself to us, and we get to reveal him to others. Sometimes that task is quite difficult—even costing lives at times—but still the mystery of God’s using people like us is amazing.

Today’s reading about Jeremiah reminds us of this mystery. At the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, God spoke to Jeremiah and gave him some details about the coming destruction of Jerusalem. Such statements as “This word came from the Lord” (Jer. 26:1) and “this is what the Lord says” (Jer. 26:2) reveal a God who wants to communicate with people—and even the coming judgment in Babylon would be an act of love to return His people to their God.

In turn, Jeremiah’s job was to speak all that God had given him; in fact, he was not to “hold back a word” when speaking to them (Jer. 26:2).  His message was an unpopular one, but the prophet knew that the Lord had sent him there. God had spoken to him, and he was to speak truth to others.

To this day, the God who made us and leads us also grants us the privilege of speaking His Word to others. How could we ever keep that Word to ourselves?

ACTION STEPS:

  • Be amazed that God speaks to us through His Word, His Spirit, and His people.
  • Don’t hold back a single insight from today’s reading that you might teach others.

PRAYER: “God, help me always to hear Your voice and then speak Your message to others.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Jeremiah 29-32
