10/15/18 Sight to the Blind

READING: John 7-9

“One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.”

John 9:25

He was born blind, which means he had never seen another human being. Including his parents. Including Jesus. Actually, including himself. He could not have known what he himself looked like.

All he could do was beg.

Then, Jesus came by.

After having a theological discussion with His disciples, Jesus spat on the ground, made mud with His saliva, put it on the man’s eyes, and told him to go wash in a local pool of water. What did the man do? He “went and washed and came back seeing” (John 9:7). He didn’t fully understand who Jesus was—and Jesus’ request that he wash his mud-covered eyes in the Pool of Siloam was surely a bit strange—but he nevertheless did exactly what Jesus told him to do. And, consequently, the blind beggar gained his sight.

Doing exactly what Jesus calls us to do is always the right move, even when the request feels strange to us . . . like loving our enemies, and forgiving those who hurt us, and denying ourselves daily, and making disciples of all the nations. The man called Jesus is worthy of our obedience.

ACTION STEPS:

  • Do whatever God commands you to do today.
  • Thank God that He is still a healing God.

PRAYER: “Lord, I praise You that You give sight to the blind. Open my heart to see You fully today.”
