03/06/19 The Lord is Not with You

READING: Numbers 14-15, Mark 9:2-29

God had judged His people. They had listened to the negative spies who said they could never conquer the Promised Land, and the results were devastating. God told them through Moses that they would indeed not enter the land; instead, their carcasses would “fall in this wilderness” (Num. 14:32). The spies themselves, with the exception of Joshua and Caleb, were “struck down by the Lord” (Num. 14:37).

Some of the grieving people, though, decided they would try to enter the Land. They admitted their wrong and planned to attempt a conquest on their own. Moses warned them, however: “Don’t go, because the Lord is not among you and you will be defeated by your enemies” (Num. 14:42). The people didn’t listen to Moses, and their enemies defeated them and drove them back.

It is never a good step to try to move forward when God’s not with you. Defeat is at hand.

PRAYER: “Father, stop me whenever I think about stepping out on my own.”
