03/09/19 Astonished

READING: Numbers 21-22,  Mark 10:32-52

I must admit that I’ve apparently skipped over this verse before. At least, I had not taken time to consider it seriously.

Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem, knowing that death awaited Him. Nevertheless, He set his sights toward the Holy City and took the lead in that direction. And, “the disciples were astonished” (Mark 10:32) at His unwavering commitment. Within days, His opponents would “mock him, spit on him, flog him, and kill him” (Mark 10:34).

Perhaps the disciples were astonished at Jesus’ willingness to walk into conflict. At His laser beam focus on the Father’s will. At His undying faithfulness. At His commitment unto death. Nothing would deter Him from doing the Father’s will, no matter how much it would cost Him.

We, like the disciples, should also be amazed! The gospel is no story to take for granted.

PRAYER: “Jesus, I can only praise You for who You are and what You’ve done for me. Thank You.”
