03/27/19 Astonished

READING: Deuteronomy 22-24; Luke 2:36-52

I cannot imagine what it must have been like to listen to Jesus teaching, even at age 12. We don’t know what kinds of questions and answers He was giving to the leaders, but we do know that “all those who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers” (Luke 2:46). His comments, whatever they were, surely caught the people off guard for their wisdom – and this would not be the last time people would be amazed by Jesus. His teaching would astound them whether He was 12 or 30.

Then, I’m reminded that we have Jesus’ teachings in front of us in His Word. We may not hear His voice like those of His day did, and we cannot see His body language and facial expressions – but we can still hear His wisdom. Still, it ought to be that we’re amazed not only by His words, but also by the simple truth that He chooses to communicate with us at all. Moreover, we who have open access to the Word of God—all of it, in our language, with no threat to us as we read it—are uniquely blessed.

Let us all be astonished today.

PRAYER: “Jesus, thank You for Your Word. You’re amazing.”
