06/13/19 Remaining in Him

READING:  1 Chronicles 4:1-6:30, John 15:1-25

“Remain in me.” Jesus said something similar to these words several times in today’s New Testament reading. In fact, note both the frequency and the significance of remaining in Him, according to Jesus’ words:

“Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me.  If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown aside like a branch and he withers. They gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned.  If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want and it will be done for you.”(John 15:4-7)

The word “remain” is also translated as “abide” in other versions (ESV, NASB). The word carries the sense of deep connection with, full reliance on, and unwavering commitment to the vine. That’s the mark of a true believer—one who clings to the vine who holds on to him, and whose life produces fruit that glorifies God. Continual fellowship with Christ is assumed, and ongoing disobedience is not an option. We simply cannot be the people God expects us to be apart from a personal relationship with Jesus; He alone is our source of eternal life. Remaining in Him, then, is evidence that we are His.

I needed the reminder today that I can do nothing without Jesus—but with Him, I’m privileged to follow the God who indwells us and hears our prayers.

PRAYER: “Father, help me to remain in You every step of the way.”
