08/04/19 Practical Discipleship: Christian Husbands and Wives

READING: Ephesians 5:25

May I be honest with you with this post? When I got married, I wasn’t sure I would know how to love Pam as Christ loves the church (Eph 5:25). I knew I had to figure it out, but I didn’t know where to turn for guidance. Consequently, I simply started watching men I respected to see how they treated their wives. I’ve not always sufficiently changed in light of what I’ve learned from them—that is, I still have much room for growth—but I still pay attention to seemingly healthy, godly homes.

As we think about practical discipleship tips this week, I encourage you to make sure your mentees have opportunity to spend time with more mature couples who love the Lord and each other. Young couples often long for time with older couples, and they’ll take advantage of any opportunity they have to ask questions and seek advice. Even an occasional meal with them can be life-transforming for them.

Ideally, your marriage will be one of these models. Help your mentees to see prayerfulness, kindness, affection, and grace lived out in front of them. Show them such godly leadership that they long for their own marriages to be the same. Multiple generations will be blessed as a result.

PRAYER: “Father, help me to guide the next generation to be godly spouses.”

TOMORROW’S READING:  Job 38-39, Acts 27:1-12
