12/27/19 Grace and Forgiveness

READING: Zephaniah 1-3, Haggai 1-2, Revelation 18:1-19:5

The older I get, the more I realize the power of God’s grace. I know (at least to some extent) the depth of my sin, and I know I’m guilty before a holy God. He would be just in bringing ultimate judgment on me—yet He is gracious. He offers forgiveness when we turn to Him in faith and repentance.

The people of Zephaniah’s day were rebellious, and thus facing the coming wrath of God. Nevertheless, God called them back to Himself and offered them grace: “Seek the Lord, all you humble of the earth, who carry out what he commands. Seek righteousness, seek humility; perhaps you will be concealed on the day of the Lord’s anger” (Zeph 2:3). When we seek God with all our being, follow Him humbly, and live righteously, we can rely on His willingness to watch over us when He sends judgment on sinful people. That gift of divine shelter, however, is not based on our goodness; it’s based on God’s unmerited favor.

So, today, I sing the words of “Amazing Grace” more loudly than I’ve ever sung them. I am the recipient of God’s love.

PRAYER: “Lord, I can only praise You today. Grant me grace to follow You fully and humbly.”
