12/29/19 Practical Discipleship: Encouraging Thanksgiving

READING: Philippians 1

Today is the final “practical discipleship” devotion for 2019. In 2020, I will use Sundays simply to review the previous week’s devotions just in case you need to get caught up with your reading. Thus, I’m writing today to tell you how grateful I am for you and others who’ve read the Word with me this past year. In the words of the Apostle Paul, “I give thanks to my God for every remembrance of you” (Phil 1:3).

Paul often expressed his thanksgiving for other believers, but I fear we have lost that art. Far too seldom do we say “thanks” to those who faithfully love God and us; in fact, we too seldom say thanks for most things. Here’s an encouragement I challenge you to give your disciples: teach them (that is, model for them) our responsibility to be grateful people—and show them the significance of writing a “thank you” note, email, text, or message to other believers. A well-placed, prayed over expression of thanksgiving can lighten the heart of even the most struggling believer.

I say it to you again then—thank you! You honor me by reading with me.

PRAYER: “Lord, thank You for these friends.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Zechariah 7-14, Revelation 21
