01/17/20 Idolatry

READING: Genesis 26-27, Mark 10

Something must have motivated the young ruler to seek input from Jesus regarding eternal life. Perhaps a loved one had died. Maybe he faced a physical illness. He might have experienced some seemingly near-death experience, and he couldn’t get eternity off his mind. Or, maybe he simply heard Jesus speak and wanted more information. Whatever it was, he wanted to know from Jesus, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17).

At the same time, though, he was not so interested in eternal life that he was willing to give up his possessions. He had kept much of the law (or, so he said), but his possessions still meant more to him than God did. His idolatry got in the way of his eternity.

What are the things that get in the way of your walk with God? What keeps you from following God fully?

PRAYER: “Lord, please break me of my idolatries.”
