8 Books and Blog Posts on Spiritual Warfare

Several years ago, I recommended a list of books on spiritual warfare. Because that topic is my primary area of study, I continually read more books on the subject. Here are few more I recommend, followed by three blog posts about spiritual warfare:

Books:

  1. Brian Borgman & Rob Ventura, Spiritual Warfare: A Biblical and Balanced Perspective, 2014A discussion of the armor of God (Eph 6), this 124-page work includes appendices on “The Sovereignty of God and Satan,” “Can a Christian be Demon-Possessed?” and “Christian, Pray for Your Pastors!”
  2. William F. Cook III, and Chuck Lawless, Spiritual Warfare in the Storyline of Scripture: A Biblical, Theological, and Practical Approach, 2019. Forgive my personal plug, but this book is a unique one that offers a survey of biblical teachings about warfare (part 1) followed by practical application in the battle (part 2). It’s longer (368 pp), but I trust it’s a helpful resource.
  3. Iain M. Duguid, The Whole Armor of God: How Christ’s Victory Strengthens Us for Spiritual Warfare, 2019. This short book (117 pp) unpacks each piece of the armor of God and situates it within the victory that Christ has already won for us.
  4. John R. Gilhooly, 40 Questions about Angels, Demons, and Spiritual Warfare, 2018. In endorsing this book (231 pages), I wrote that it is “a biblically sound, historically informative, and practically relevant resource” – and it’s an invaluable tool to keep handy when studying these topics.
  5. David Powlison, Safe & Sound: Standing Firm in Spiritual Battles, 2019. In 103 pages, Powlison introduces us to the reality of spiritual warfare and then helps us consider ways to counsel others in a section entitled, “Counseling in the Reality of Spiritual Warfare.”

I would add to this list and your prior 8 book list the following books by Mark Bubeck, a Moody Bible Institute graduate “The Adversary” and Overcoming the Adversary.” These two books were extremely helpful in my first SBC pastorate in rural Arkansas in the 1980’s as I addressed serious spiritual warfare issues from the demonic. They were recommended reads by Mike Curry of “Light Ministries” and by Dr. Sam Cathey, the leading SBC authority on spiritual warfare for several decades as I sought council from these men.
