07/07/20 I Know Whom I Have Believed

READING: Ecclesiastes 1-3, Psalm 45, 2 Timothy 1

Today, I’m walking down memory lane as I read our New Testament daily reading. I’ve been a believer for almost 46 years, but I still remember the hymns I first learned as a young, 13-year-old believer. I suspect I remember them because they were so new and fresh to me – so different from anything I had ever heard before. Grace was so powerful to me, and forgiveness was so freeing to me, that singing about salvation was a joy. I’ve not sung many of these hymns for years, but they still echo in my head when I hear some of their words.

That’s why I’m remembering today the hymn,I Know Whom I Have Believed.” What I remember is my peace in knowing that somehow my life now rested in God’s hand, and He would take care of me. What I didn’t realize then was that some of the words came from Paul’s writing in 2 Timothy 1: “But I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me[ until that day” (v. 12). I wish I had known then, as I suspect the song would have meant even more to me then had I known enough of the Scriptures to recognize this verse. I’ve since learned that there is a unique sweetness to singing when the words are first God’s words.

To sing God’s Word is a gift indeed.

PRAYER: “Thank You, Lord, for Your Word and for the opportunity to sing it.”
