07/09/20 Influences

READING: Ecclesiastes 7-9, Psalm 46, 2 Timothy 3

I enjoy studying the mentoring work of the apostle Paul, particularly related to his discipling Timothy. I am reminded via today’s New Testament reading, though, that Paul was not the only influence in Timothy’s life. In fact, this portion of 2 Timothy 3 shows us several influences:

“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. You know those who taught you, and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Tim 3:14-17)

First, the Word of God was foundational for Timothy’s growth. Through the Word he would learn what to believe and how to live. He had learned those teachings early, and it was his mother and grandmother who taught him (2 Tim 1:5). Thus, his family members—at least the two mentioned in chapter 1—were vital to his spiritual growth. God, then, also connected Timothy with Paul so he had another mentor to strengthen what Timothy had already learned.

The Word of God that guides us. Believing family members who raise us and teach us. Fellow believers who invest in us. All are God’s gifts to us.

PRAYER: “Thank You, Lord, for Your Word, for families, and for mentors.”
