06/18/21 Inquiring of the Lord

READING: 1 Chronicles 10-12, John 18

The contrast likely could not be more obvious. As the writer of 1 Chronicles describes the end of King Saul’s life, he uses two phrases that are dramatically different: “He even consulted a medium for guidance, but he did not inquire of the Lord” (1 Chron 10:13-14). Saul had consulted with the medium at Endor in 1 Samuel 28 when God did not immediately answer his request for help with the Philistines—and the phrase “did not inquire of the Lord” seems to suggest an overall lack of dependence on God. Saul may have sought information from the Lord at times, but his life did not show trust in Him.

We read these words, and it’s easy—and right—to condemn Saul for his actions. At the same time, though, I wonder how many times you and I seek answers elsewhere when the Lord doesn’t answer us as quickly as we want—or, when He answers us in ways we don’t like. We may not turn to mediums like Saul did, but we are sometimes guilty of turning to other people, other resources, other ideas, etc., when we want an answer now. I pray we instead always inquire of the Lord and lean on Him, never wavering in wrong directions as we await His response.

PRAYER: “God, help me to seek You first and to keep my eyes on You always.”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  Inquire of the Lord about all you do today.
