10/25/21 I Am the One

READING: Isaiah 51-55, 1 Thessalonians 1:1-2:16

Today’s one of those days when the Word simply grabs my soul, shakes my sin out of me, and calls me to trust God. In today’s Old Testament reading, the people of God were wanting God to act on their behalf against their oppressors. He responded to them with a reminder of just who He is: “I—I am the one who comforts you” (Isa 51:12). The repetition of the pronoun “I” may well be in response to the people’s calling on God to “wake up, wake up” in verse 9; if so, the repetition is emphasis that the Lord was indeed awake and hearing their prayers. He was the God who brought them comfort, the One who would bring judgment on the enemies of His people.

Because He reigns supreme and will ultimately carry out His plan, the people had no reason to fear others: “Who are you that you should fear humans who die, or a son of man who is given up like grass?” (Isa 51:9). Humans might seem formidable foes today, but they will not reign over the God who rules. They will eventually die; their lives are but as fragile as grass – so why should we fear them when the eternal God is on our side (and, for that matter, living within us)? He is the husband of His people, their Maker, the “Holy One of Israel,” their Redeemer, the “God of the whole earth” (Isa 54:5).

He is our God. We are His people. That simple truth ought to bring us great comfort and give us deep peace.

PRAYER: “Almighty God, thank You that Your Word does not come back empty. Accomplish what You want to do in my life today.”

DAILY ACTION STEP: Throughout the day, read each of today’s Old Testament chapters at least one more time. Find your joy in Him.

TOMORROW’S READING: Isaiah 56-60, 1 Thessalonians 2:17-4:18
