02/03/19 Practical Discipleship: Finding a Mentor

READING: Exodus 18:1-27

Moses had Jethro in his life to give him advice, and all of us need that kind of person. We may not always use the term, “mentor,” but we need someone with wisdom to speak into our lives. If you don’t have that kind of person, here are some suggestions for finding somebody:

  1. Watch mature believers in your church. Take note of those whose spiritual walk grabs your attention.
  2. Take the initiative to seek some time with that person. Perhaps you can have lunch together sometime.
  3. Humbly ask for some regular time just to sit and talk about living faithfully as a Christian. The time need not be formal – it only needs to be time for you talk about important matters of life. Consider meeting at least monthly,
  4. Be grateful for whatever time you can get. Even if you’d like more time, thank God for any time you get.
  5. If someone is unwilling to meet with you, keep praying and seeking until you find somebody. NOTE: If you can’t find anyone locally, don’t hesitate to seek a friend/mentor through Skype or some other electronic means. The approach will be different, but it works.

My prayer is this practical discipleship tip will help you find someone like Jethro for your life.

PRAYER: “God, guide me to someone who can walk beside me as I follow You.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Exodus 24-25, Matthew 22:15-33
