READING: Leviticus 10-12, Matthew 27:32-56
It’s actually hard to believe, were it not for the fact that the Bible says it was so. When Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died, the earth shook. The veil of the Temple was torn in two from above. And, perhaps even more astonishingly, “The tombs were also opened and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised” (Matt. 27:52). It’s possible that the graves were opened at Jesus’ death, and these resurrected saints (perhaps Old Testament saints who looked forward to a Redeemer) came to life “after his resurrection” and then “appeared to many” (Matt. 27:53).
Only Matthew’s Gospel records this miracle, and we are not given many details about it. The best we can say is that this resurrection shows us that resurrection is not for Jesus alone; His followers will themselves be resurrected. This miracle is evidence that the cross of Jesus provides life everlasting. While I may not be prepared to answer every question about these open graves, I’m deeply grateful that eternal life is a real thing. It’s not just an Easter message; it’s a daily message.
PRAYER: “Thank You, Lord, for conquering death.”
