READING: Isaiah 41-44
I don’t remember the situation, but I do remember the verses. Given the nature of the verses, I suspect I was facing a time of faith struggle—perhaps related to my early days of trying to lead people as a young, inexperienced, easily frightened pastor. A friend had been challenging me to memorize scripture, and he introduced me to Scripture “packets” of verses to memorize. They were not connected to my personal quiet time; instead, they were simply verses someone else had added to the packet of memorization options. Apparently, I needed this verse on this day.
Here was the text I memorized (in KJV, what I read early in my ministry):
Do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be afraid, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you; I will help you;
I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand. (Isa 41:10)
I had much to learn then, but it was good to know that I need not be afraid if God was with me. He promised to give me strength. He would help me. He would hold onto my hand even if I were struggling. God would protect me by His power and His presence, and that’s all that mattered.
I just need to remember that truth today; in fact, the repetition of the phrase “do not fear” in today’s overall reading suggests even the Hebrews needed to hear this command again and again.
“Lord, I’m listening today . . . .”
PERSONAL REFLECTION: Is anything frightening you today? Do you need God’s strength this day?
PRAYER: “God, thank You for holding my hand.”
