03/20/24 Amazing Grace

READING:

One-year plan: Deuteronomy 4-6, Mark 16

Two-year plan: Exodus 34:29-35:29, Matthew 25:1-13

——–

I realize scholars debate the ending of the Gospel of Mark, but two texts in this latter part of the book reflect the rest of the book. In fact, the placement of these two verses together reminds the reader of the incredible grace of God in using any of us in His work.

The first text directs us toward disciples who struggled believing the truth of the resurrection: “Later he appeared to the Eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table. He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who saw him after he had risen” (Mark 16:14). The next text, though, seems almost out of place following Jesus’ rebuke of the disciples: “Then he said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation’” (Mark 16:15). The disciples wrestled with faith, but still Jesus gave them the responsibility to proclaim His message.

They were not worthy. They were not trained. They weren’t always faithful. They earned Jesus’ rebuke – but He nevertheless put on their shoulders the work of the Great Commission. God alone would get the glory when He used struggling disciples to do His work. We get to be part of His work because of His amazing grace.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Where do you most see God’s grace in your life?

PRAYER: “Father, You’re a sweet, gracious God.”
