READING: Obadiah 1; Psalm 82-83
TEXTS AND APPLICATION: Sometimes the Word of God is just wonderfully painful to read. In the book of Obadiah, the prophet’s words address the Edomites, enemies of the people of God who lived in a mountainous region high above the Dead Sea. In their height and seeming inaccessibility, they found a false sense of security and pride:
Obad. 1:3-4 Your presumptuous heart has deceived you, you who live in clefts of the rock in your home on the heights, who say to yourself, “Who can bring me down to the ground?” Though you seem to soar like an eagle and make your nest among the stars, even from there I will bring you down. This is the Lord’s declaration.
Simply stated, God knows exactly where each of us is — and the person who thinks he can live in the heights and avoid the judgment of God is deceived. The One who created the heights has no problem finding us. He will indeed bring us down if necessary.
PRAYER: Pray with me that all of us would be aware of any tendencies toward pride.
