TEXTS AND APPLICATION: These chapters continue the story of the capture of Jerusalem and the defeat of Judah. The single insight we focus on today may seem obvious, but we should not take its truth for granted: God always keeps His Word.
Thus, the Word tells us one reason Jerusalem fell: God did what He said He would do in judging His people.
2 Kings 24:2 The Lord sent Chaldean, Aramean, Moabite, and Ammonite raiders against Jehoiakim. He sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the Lord He had spoken through His servants the prophets.
The people rebelled against God — so much so that they turned to idols, as we’ve seen in so many other devotions from the Old Testament this year. God warned them through the prophets that Judah would fall, and fall it did. God did not forget His Word.
As I think of this truth I’ve heard so many times before, I’m reminded of how much this truth should intersect with my life everyday:
- God really does meet my needs, as He said He would. (Phil. 4:19)
- I really will reap what I sow. (Gal. 6:7-8)
- Jesus really is coming back. (1 Thess. 4:13-18)
- I really will stand before Christ in judgment. (2 Cor. 5:10)
- He really will be worshiped by the nations. (Rev. 7:9)
All of it really will happen. God said so.
My responsibility is to live in the light of that everyday reality.
PRAYER: “Father, forgive me for taking Your Word for granted. Remind me to live every day trusting that Your Word is true — and knowing in faith that You will always keep Your Word.”
