READING: Acts 18:19-19:41
TEXTS AND APPLICATION: Anyone who knows me well knows that Acts 19:11-16 is probably the theme text for my ministry. The Apostle Paul was doing mighty works in Ephesus, and some professional exorcists attempted to tap into his power. Their mistakes were multitude: they took on they devil on the basis of somebody else’s power; they fought the enemy without wearing the full armor of God; they reduced the name of Jesus to a magical formula. Any one of these three leads to trouble.
Thus, the demon was not alarmed. Instead, he spoke back when the exorcists tried to cast him out: “I know Jesus, and I recognize Paul — but who are you?” (Acts 19:15). Loosely paraphrased, his words were, “I know Jesus because He’s the Son of God. I know Paul because he walks with God. But you — you don’t threaten me.” Religious people who claimed power took on the enemy, and they lost big time.
I read this text, and I’m struck with this question: “Do I — and the people I equip — so walk with God that the devil knows me by name?” More pointedly, the question is, “Does my life make hell shake?”
I’m simply not interested in going through the motions of Christianity. I need this reminder that any power I claim that doesn’t threaten the enemy is no power at all.
ACTION STEPS: Take some time today to honestly and deeply consider this question: “Does the devil know me by name?” If not, repent as needed.
PRAYER: “Father, so fill me with Your Spirit and guide me into obedience that hell shakes. Glorify Yourself through me.”
