READING: 2 Samuel 19-21
It’s just one verse, but it speaks loudly to me today: “And after that, God responded to the plea for the land” (2 Sam 22:14b).
The people of Israel had been suffering from a famine for three years, but now God heard their prayers to restore their land. David had been obedient to bring the bones of Saul and Jonathan to the land of Benjamin, the people were following the words of their king, and after that, God heard their prayers for the land. There is something about neediness, obedience, and brokenness that contributes to answered prayer.
What is that “after that” issue for you — meaning, what blockage to answered prayer do you need to remove? Might it be one of these?
After I stop this recurrent sin, God will respond to my prayers.
After I work on reconciliation with that friend or family member, . . .
After I put a filter on my computer and stop looking at pornography, . . .
After I start loving my spouse better, . . .
After I actually pray, . . .
After I finally accept God’s calling in my life, . . .
After I repent of my lust, . . .
After I worry less and trust more, . . .
After I start reading the Word again, . . .
After I start sharing the gospel more, . . .
After I’m honest with somebody about ___________, God will respond to my prayers.
You get the point, I’m sure. Deal today with whatever it is in your life that blocks your prayer channel. Let your “after that” statement announce God’s willingness to hear your prayers today.
ACTION STEPS:
- Determine what your “after that” issues are today. Repent of them.
- After you repent, pray more.
PRAYER: “Lord, I’m still guilty of sin. Please forgive me for ________________, and begin to hear my prayers even more.”
