06/07/16 Darkness

READING: Job 24-28

I tell students all the time, “If you want to know where the enemy’s working in your life, tell me what your secrets are. What are the things you’re hiding right now?” Now, I’m not arguing that all of us are supposed to confess all our sins to everyone else, but I am arguing that any time we’re concealing stuff, the enemy’s winning at some level. He delights when we hide behind the door.

In fact, the enemy always pushes away from the light and encourages us to stay in the darkness. Here’s the way Job described it for those who break the commandments of God:

“There are those who rebel against the light, who are not acquainted with its ways, and do not stay in its paths. The murderer rises before it is light, that he may kill the poor and needy, and in the night he is like a thief. The eye of the adulterer also waits for the twilight, saying, ‘No eye will see me’; and he veils his face. In the dark they dig through houses; by day they shut themselves up; they do not know the light. For deep darkness is morning to all of them; for they are friends with the terrors of deep darkness.” (Job 24:13-17)

We often prefer to stay in the darkness rather than bring our wrong into the light. It just “feels” more secure to hide than to come out in the open — so we prefer midnight over morning, nighttime over daytime, secrets over revelation, and denial over confession. We stay in the darkness, and here’s what we miss: the grace and love of God who is faithful to forgive our sins if we confess them to Him (1 John 1:9).  But, that’s the way the enemy works. He always wants us to hide, keeping us from the One who most loves us.

How foolish it is to run to the darkness when God wants to give us grace in the light.

ACTION STEPS:

  • Be honest. Confess anything you’re hiding today. Don’t let the enemy win.
  • Accept the forgiveness that God wants to give you.

PRAYER: “God, I want to walk fully in the light today. Forgive me for my attraction to the darkness.”
