READING: Psalms 74-77
Throughout our readings this year, we’ve been reminded over and over again that God is our warrior. The psalmist, too, recognized this truth; “At your rebuke, God of Jacob, both horse and chariot lie still” (Psalm 76:6). When God speaks as warrior, no one or no thing can stand against Him. He is the God who performs miracles and displays His “power among the peoples” (Psalm 77:14).
Still, though, the psalmist also recognized an even more significant truth we’ve briefly noted in previous devotions: “It is you alone who are to be feared” (Psalm 76:7). The One who defeats all of His enemies is also the One who calls us to holiness — and who holds us accountable for our wrong. There are times when He allows us to live out the negative consequences of our sin, seemingly permitting our enemy to win at least temporarily (Psalm 74:1-11). His power is evident in creation, with heavens resounding with thunder and lightning bolts flashing across the sky (Psalm 77:17). Even His wrath against mankind brings Him praise (Psalm 76:10). It is He “who judges: He brings one down, he exalts another” (Psalm 75:7).
With all of these realities in mind, however, the psalmist still knows that this God loves His people. He “brings salvation on the earth” (Psalm 74:12), and He led His people “like a flock” (Psalm 77:20). When the psalmist remembered these stories, he found renewed hope and trust in His God.
You and I can do the same. In fact, though “not one of the warriors can lift his hands” against God (Psalm 76:5), we can lift our hands in praise to Him. Our godly fear ought to lead to our godly rejoicing.
ACTION STEPS:
- Think about your favorite stories of the Bible — especially those that most encourage your faith. Remember those stories throughout the day.
- If you’re taking the power of God for granted today, ask Him to deepen your understanding of His strength. Fear Him in a healthy way.
PRAYER: “God, I praise You for who You are. Help me to make the right choices today because You love me and because You are marvelously and fearfully great.”
