I’ve thought about pastors a lot the last few days after spending the weekend with one of my former students in a new pastorate. Maybe some of things I’ve loved about pastoring will encourage you today:
- Seeing eyes light up when the gospel becomes real
- Hearing little voices cry, “Pastor Chuck!” as kids run up to hug me
- Sending out missionaries the congregation has raised
- Celebrating the death of a true saint of God
- Baptizing a new believer
- Holding a baby in my arms as her parents dedicate her to the Lord
- Explaining the good news to someone who’s never heard it
- Seeing a dad read the Bible to his kids
- Preaching the Word of God
- Playing a role in reconciling a marriage
- Investing in men who fall in love with Jesus
- Rejoicing with a wife who’s patiently prayed her husband into the kingdom
- Serving the Lord’s Supper
- Hearing a congregation lift the rafters with praise
- Playing “broom hockey” with some really cool teenagers
- Loving a staff member through struggles
- Watching God free addicts from their bondages
- Being a father to young men whose fathers are absent
- Praying with a hurting friend
- Defeating the devil
Pastors, what would you add to this list?
No joy.
Thanks. Praying for you, Joshua.
