06/04/17 If You Love Me

READING: 2 Chronicles 21-22, John 14

“If you love Me, you will keep My commands.”

John 14:15

It’s easy to say you love Jesus. Children say it, and they mean it with their level of understanding. Teens say it, both because they mean it and sometimes because they’re on a spiritual high after a conference or retreat. Adults say it, from the new adult believer to the seasoned Christ-follower who has loved Him for years. You and I say the words, too – we love Jesus.

It’s easier, though, to say you love Jesus than it is to prove it.

Here’s what I mean by that last statement. Jesus was clear that those who love Him would make that love evident by their obedience. Three times in today’s reading we hear similar words, followed by an affirmation of the negative as well:

  • “If you love Me, you will keep My commands.” (John 14:15)
  • “The one who has My commands and keeps them is the one who loves Me.” (John 14:21)
  • “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.” (John 14:23)
  • “The one who doesn’t love Me will not keep My words.” (John 14:24)

Thus, true love for Jesus equals following His teachings and obeying His commands – and that’s why proving that we love Him is harder than saying the words. A verbal expression of love means nothing if our actions of disobedience betray our words.

God so loves us, though, that He sends His Spirit to us to empower us, guide us, strengthen us, and convict us. He is the Counselor, the Spirit of Truth, the indwelling One who teaches us all things and reminds us of Jesus’ teachings (John 14:17, 26). You see, God loves us enough to grant us the power to obey what He commands; He loves us enough to help us love Him in return. That’s a good God!

ACTION STEPS:

  • Determine the places where your love for Jesus is least evident in your actions.
  • Show your renewed love for Jesus by turning from any wrong in your life.

PRAYER: “Jesus, I love You. Grant me grace to show that love by my actions.”
