READING: Hosea 9-11, Revelation 3
“When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called My son.”
Hosea 11:1
It’s one of the most intimate passages in the book of Hosea. His people would be defeated because of their sin, but God still loved them like a husband loves his wife and a father loves his son. Indeed, God loved His son [His people] and called them out of Egypt, taught them how to walk, led them, and fed them (Hos. 11:1-4). They were “bent on” turning from Him (Hos. 11:7), but His love remained faithful and steadfast.
His love was so great that this chapter of today’s reading erupts with emotional words that show us the passionate heart of God:
How can I give you up, Ephraim?
How can I surrender you, Israel?
How can I make you like Admah?
How can I treat you like Zeboiim?
I have had a change of heart;
My compassion is stirred! (Hos. 11:8)
God could not give up His people. He would not surrender them to false gods. Nor would He allow them to be destroyed like the cities of Admah and Zeboiim. God was not a lifeless idol with no emotions; rather, His love was gripping, everlasting, kind, and forgiving. His compassion was ultimately greater than the Hebrews’ rebellion.
God loves me. And you. Rest in that truth today.
ACTION STEPS:
- Tell somebody today about how much God loves you.
- If you’re away from God, turn to Him – He will welcome you.
PRAYER: “Thank You, Lord, for loving me even in my rebellion.”
