01/02/18 I Will Sing to the Lord

READING: John 1:1-3; Psalm 8; 104

“I will sing to the Lord all my life.”

Psalm 104:33

God handiwork in creation is magnificent. Jesus, who is the Light of the World, was instrumental in that creation; in fact, “apart from him not one thing was created that has been created” (John 1:3, 8:12). In that creation, God “wraps himself in light as if it were a robe, spreading out the sky like a canopy” (Psa. 104:2). The sun itself “knows when to set” according to His plan (Psa. 104:19). He set the moon and stars in place (Psa. 8:3), and the evening light helps to differentiate from the day. Just a day or two of looking at nature will surely cause us to wonder at God’s power and then cry out with the psalmist, “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name throughout the earth!” (Psa. 8:1).

Indeed, we can then only wonder with the psalmist who we are against this backdrop of God’s majesty. We seem so small over against the planets, so insignificant over against the universe, so tiny a creation in the mighty hands of the Creator. Nevertheless, God gave us dominion and responsibility over creation, remembers us, looks after us, and has crowned us “with glory and honor” (Psa. 8:3-8). He has made us the crown of His creation—and our role is to proclaim His magnificent name to the nations.

So, today, let us sing His praises with all our being! He alone is worthy of our song.

ACTION STEPS:

  • Slow down enough today to see God’s glory in creation. Be awed.
  • Sing your favorite praise chorus throughout the day.

PRAYER: “God, I pray with the psalmist, ‘May my meditation today be pleasing to You.’”

TOMORROW’S READING: Genesis 3-5
