READING: Jeremiah 33-37
“Call to me and I will answer you.”
Jeremiah 33:3
They are just a few sentences, but they’re packed with incredible words. Jeremiah was locked in the courtyard of the guard, and the Lord spoke to him for a second time in that place. Read this text, and note all the words and concepts that are beyond our comprehension: “Thus says the LORD who made the earth, the LORD who formed it to establish it—the LORD is his name: ‘Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known’” (Jer. 33:2-3).
First, it was the Lord who spoke to Jeremiah. He is the one who created the earth, who spoke it into existence with His very words. He is not, though, some distant god who put the world into motion and separated Himself from it. No, this was the God who knew Jeremiah intimately, knew exactly where he was, and had a message for him.
Second, this God invited Jeremiah to call to Him, and He would hear his prayer. Jeremiah was just one prophet among many people in the world, but God would hear him as if he were the only one praying. Then, God would somehow tell him “great and hidden things,” unsearchable things about the future. The God who created the past was still in charge of the present, and He would carry out His plan in the future. His word—whether it was a word to say, “Let there be light” or a word to encourage Jeremiah—was trustworthy.
And, the same God whose Word is still trustworthy still welcomes us when we call upon Him today.
