“For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Matthew 12:37
I wish I knew when I started ministry just how much my words matter. I knew they mattered on Sunday, but as a 20-year-old preacher, I did not think enough about how much they mattered on Monday. As a young leader, I’m sure some of my words were careless. Others were likely rude. I know some were impatient. I fear I let my guard down around friends in ways that would have been displeasing to God.
So, these words of Jesus grab my attention every time I read them: “I tell you that on the day of judgment people will have to account for every careless word they speak. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matt. 12:36-37). My words then reflected a heart that wasn’t where it needed to be then.
What I’ve learned since then is that my ministry is built around my words. Sure, some of ministry is simply presence, but I can list many ministry responsibilities that depend upon the integrity of my words (e.g., preaching, counseling, marrying, leading, etc.). In those cases, my careless words during the rest of the week can cause listeners to question the veracity of my words on Sunday. That’s far too high a price to pay when my gospel words are to be life-giving.
ACTION STEPS:
- Guard your every word today. Let your speech glorify God.
- Take time throughout the day to use your lips to praise God.
PRAYER: “God, I can’t do this well without Your help. Keep my lips holy today.”
