10/17/19 Powerless Gods

READING: Isaiah 37-39, Colossians 1:1-23

Sometimes I take God’s power for granted, and I pray too little for those who are worshipping false gods that have no power. Sennacherib, king of Assyria, “mocked and blasphemed” the Holy One of Israel (Isa 37:23). He raged against God in arrogance, and he was convinced that the God of Israel could not protect His people from the Assyrian might. After all, he said, the gods of the other nations could not halt the Assyrian advance, and surely the God of Israel was no stronger. In that sense, Sennacherib did a most foolish thing by equating the true God with false gods of the nations.

In fact, the king of Assyria would soon learn about the powerlessness of his own gods over against the true God. On a day when he was “worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch” (Isa 37:38), his own sons killed him and fled. He had been certain that nothing could stop the Assyrians under the leadership of their gods, but Nisroch could not even protect the king from his own family. The God of Israel would not be dethroned.

I am grateful today that our God is indeed God—which means that no other being is His match. Then, I’m amazed that He who rules over all invites us to come boldly to His throne (Heb 4:16). When we turn to Him and lean on Him, we can know that we’re trusting the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  There is none like Him.

PRAYER: “God, thank You for being God. I pray for those around the world who worship only false gods.”
