READING: Ezekiel 9-12, Hebrews 13
I love it when the Word grabs my heart in a new way. In the past, I’ve often most meditated on Hebrews 13:17 when I’ve read today’s New Testament reading. That’s because I’m called to shepherd others, and these words are both potent and alarming to me: “since they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account.” It’s a heavy responsibility to “watch over” the spiritual condition of others and know we’ll give an account for how we do so. In fact, that’s a weight I can’t bear without the power of God in me.
Then, though, I read this benediction of this book: “Now may the God of peace, who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus—the great Shepherd of the sheep—through the blood of the everlasting covenant, equip you with everything good to do his will, working in us what is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen” (Heb 13:20-21). With all that God has called us to do, He who gives us peace and who loves us as His sheep also equips us with whatever we need to do His will. Never must we live up to our responsibilities on our own, for He is ever with us (Heb 13:5). It’s no wonder the writer of Hebrews concludes with “to whom [Him] be glory forever and ever”!
He is worthy, indeed.
PRAYER: “Thank You, Lord, for being with me. Do in me what is pleasing in Your sight.”
