12/19/19 The Bottomless Pit

READING: Joel 3, Revelation 8:1-9:12

The picture of an “abyss” or “bottomless pit” – apparently a place of imprisonment for demonic beings – occurs several times in the book of Revelation (9:1-2, 9:11, 11:7, 17:8, 20:1, 20:3). Scholars debate the identification of the “star that had fallen from heaven” (Rev 9:1), with interpretations varying from an angel to Satan himself (which is where I land, largely based on Luke 10:18). This “fallen angel” was given the “key to the shaft of the abyss” (Rev 9:1), and opening the abyss led to increased demonic activity on the earth. At the same time, though, it’s clear that the angel did not take the key—it was instead given to him, thus portraying the sovereignty of God over the whole process. The fallen angel would have the key only because God gave it to him.

While we may struggle understanding the sovereignty of God over all things, this news is actually good news to us. In no place of the Scriptures can we find Satan and his forces outside the ultimate control of God. God may give Satan a much longer leash than we might like, but the evil one and his demons nevertheless remain on a leash. They will not win this battle. Instead, as one writer has written, the demons are given “momentary power. . . . temporary freedom to do their destructive deeds that are described in the succeeding verses of this chapter.”*

God alone is the victor who will reign forever, and we can trust Him in the battle today.

PRAYER: “God, I praise You for Your power and Your control.”
