04/08/20 Weeping over Our Jerusalem

READING: Joshua 22-24, Psalm 116, Luke 19

This week is a week of celebration as we look forward to resurrection Sunday. Today’s New Testament reading also talks about people celebrating the coming of Jesus into Jerusalem, but it also contrasts starkly with Jesus’ grief over that city. Only Luke records this account: “As he approached and saw the city, he wept for it” (Luke 19:41). Their king had come into their presence. He wanted to draw them to Himself, but they had little interest in following Him on His terms. He knew severe judgment would come at the hands of the Romans—and He wept. Jesus had grieved over the city before, but now He knew again that their surface-level adoration would only bring destruction.

As we prepare to celebrate the resurrection this week, I’m especially burdened for family and friends who know the gospel, have seen it lived out in others’ lives, have perhaps even taken steps toward Christ, but who have never gone beyond superficial discussions about Him. I weep for them because I fear they will celebrate Easter without truly knowing Christ and His resurrection power.

Let’s pray together for folks like these, both here in the States and around the world. Because of the COVID-19 threat, we have a unique opportunity to preach the gospel to the world!

PRAYER: “Lord, I’m asking You to draw my family and friends into a genuine relationship with You.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Judges 1-3, Psalm 16, Luke 20
