READING: Hosea 14, 2 Chronicles 26-27, Psalm 61, Matthew 20
I wear glasses, so I know what it’s like not to have the best eyesight. My eyes get tired as I read and study. Sometimes the bags under my eyes are too obvious. But, I can still see . . . .
That was not the case for two men in today’s Matthew 20 reading. Blind and likely begging, they apparently had heard that Jesus was coming through their town. It seems they also knew something about His power and His care, as they cried out with a messianic phrase: “Lord, have mercy on us, Son of David!” (Matt 20:30, 31). Perhaps someone pointed out to them that Jesus was coming, or maybe they simply overheard others talking about Him. However they learned that Jesus was near, they didn’t hesitate to cry out to Him. The desperation of their plight + the urgency of Jesus’ coming through at that moment led to their vocal cries. Even the crowd who wanted them to keep quiet could not stop their cries.
In the end, Jesus healed the blinded men. Fully. Compassionately. Immediately. He did what nobody else could do.
And, He’s still the answer for desperate people.
PRAYER: “God, I turn to You in my desperation.”
