09/23/20 What is Unseen

READING: 2 Nahum, Psalm 149, 2 Corinthians 4

There is so much in this section of 2 Corinthians 4 that I could write for much of the day:

Therefore we do not give up. Even though our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day. For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory.  So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Cor 4:16-18)

Even when Paul was suffering, he did not give up. He saw the effects of the struggle in his body, but his eyes were not on his temporary shell; instead, he locked in on the eternal future with its glorious focus. Nothing he faced today would turn him away from the eternal. He simply knew what matters.

We may not be facing suffering, but Paul’s words still remind us to turn our attention toward the eternal. The “temporary” may look inviting, but it’s still just that: temporary. Focusing on the eternal allows us to press on through any anguish we might face today.

Focusing on the unseen–that’s what matters.

PRAYER: “God, turn my attention to the eternal today.”
