11/12/20 Don’t Be Troubled

READING: Ezekiel 40-42, John 14

Some days, we just need the sweetness of the Word of God to overwhelm our hearts. I’ve read John 14 many  times before, but it hit home today more than it usually does. Mention John 14, and I usually think of Jesus’ words that begin this chapter – “Don’t let your heart be troubled” (John 14:1).  I most often think of these words in light of the return of Christ and the promise of heaven, but the present-tense reality of its command is especially sweet to me today. In fact, the repetition of the words again in verse 27 – “Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful” – is a reminder I continually need to hear. Jesus’ use of these “bookend” phrases further emphasizes the point.

Jesus not only challenges us to trust Him, but He also tells us why we must: through the presence of the Spirit, God is with us. Yes, Jesus invites us into the privilege of being with Him forever in heaven, but He is also with us now. God has always had a plan so we never find ourselves as orphans. That truth means we are never alone.

With that truth in mind, I need not be troubled. About anything.

PRAYER: “God, thank You for Your presence  in me.”
