READING: Zechariah 9-11; 1 John 5
Eternal life.
Life that has no end. With God forever.
We who are believers have this assurance because the Son paid the price for our sin, and God has called us to Himself through His Spirit. We cannot earn our salvation. We could never merit what God has given us. All we have is through the Son—and because of Him. John is quite clear about that fact, actually: “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. The one who has the Son has life. The one who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:11-13).
We have eternal life, but only because Jesus willingly chose to die in our place. Eternal life, though, is not something we will get eventually. It’s a possession we have now, trusting God to keep His promise for eternity. Knowing that truth ought to change the way we live each day. Fears ought to lose their power. Worries should disappear. Getting “stuff” in this world should matter much less to us. Death ought not frighten us. We should have peace that the world cannot understand (Phil 4:7).
May God let it be for each of us today.
PRAYER: “Thank You, God, for eternal life—both today and in the eons to come.”
