READING: Job 12-14, Psalm 100, Revelation 13
Some sections of the book of Revelation are easier to understand than others. Trying to figure out the details about the “beast” out of the sea, the “dragon,” and the number 666 is not easy, and scholars have differed on their interpretation for centuries. We do know, though, they epitomize evil and spiritual conflict as the enemy stands against (or, is, anti-) Christ and His work.
At the same time, two phrases in today’s reading catch my attention as I consider my own walk with God. As John writes to his first-century readers—and ultimately to us—he reminds them they will need some things:
- “This calls for endurance and faithfulness from the saints” (Rev 13:10). John writes these words as he calls the believers to faithfulness unto death. Perseverance, trust, and obedience would be non-negotiable.
- “This calls for wisdom . . .” (Rev 13:18). In this case, the message is about the number of the beast and the great need for wisdom to recognize him.
John’s foreshadowing of the future gives us the assurance of God’s ultimate victory, but it also reminds us we are in a battle until the Lord brings all of history together in His kingdom. In the meantime, we follow Him with endurance, faithfulness, and wisdom—all that demand God’s grace in our lives. We endure because He has assured our perseverance. We remain faithful because He is faithful to His promises and to us. We find wisdom because He is wisdom. He is the story–not us.
PRAYER: “God, no matter what I face, help me to endure, be faithful, and wise.”
