01/01/21 And It Was So

READING: Genesis 1-3, Matthew 1

It’s 2021. A new year is here after a long, unusual year. As we look to the future, I am grateful you’ve committed to reading the Word with us. The Word has a way of piercing our souls, teaching us, training us, leading us, correcting us, convicting us, and comforting us. Indeed, the Bible is God’s message to us—and who among Christ-followers would not want to hear from Him regularly?

Today’s reading reminds us that our God is a communicating God whose word is, in fact, powerful. In the first two chapters of the Bible, we read recurrently of God’s speaking—and something happens. The first instance is Genesis 1:3—”Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light,” and the whole creation story then echoes with the world’s coming into being at the command of God. Quickly review these chapters, in fact, and you will see this pattern: “God said . . . . and it was so.”

I say it again because the Scriptures repeat the pattern: “God said . . . . and it was so.” See, our God not only communicates, but He also accomplishes everything He says He will do. All of creation responds to His Words—and you and I have the privilege of hearing from Him every day as we read His Word together. I look forward to the journey.

PRAYER: “Thank You, God, for the truth and power of your Word.”
