READING: Genesis 17:15-20:18, Matthew 6:16-7:6
It’s amazing to see how deeply human beings fall into sin. The lure of sin is so inviting and the pleasure of sin—temporary and deceiving though it is—is so strong that we sometimes fall deeply in the wrong direction. That’s the case with the men of Sodom who wanted to sleep with Lot’s guests. Their depravity is perhaps most evident in the fact that they continued to follow their wicked hearts even after God’s judgment of blindness fell on them: “They struck the men who were at the entrance of the house, both young and old, with blindness so that they were unable to find the entrance” (Gen 19:11). Some versions of the Bible read, in fact, that these men “wore themselves out groping for the door” (ESV).
You would think that judgment of blindness would have at least slowed down these men. You’d think that kind of judgment would have brought them to repentance, but that was not the case. They continued to press on so much that they exhausted themselves trying to find the door. That’s how strongly they wanted to sin.
Lest we condemn them without examining ourselves, however, we can be just as driven toward sin. We are all in trouble apart from the grace of God.
PRAYER: “God, I need Your help. Every day. Every minute. Every second.”
DAILY ACTION STEP: If you have a sin that’s controlling you, confess it to God and at least one other believer today. Don’t let the devil win.
